Reporting and General Instructions
Any unvaccinated student who has been in close physical contact with an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19 will be quarantined. Absent further guidance or developments, vaccinated students who come in close contact with an individual who has tested positive do not need to quarantine unless they exhibit COVID-19 symptoms. Students will be notified that they are a close contact by the College’s COVID-19 Response Team.
Health Services will reach out to students to offer support and to answer any medical questions students might have. It is imperative that students in quarantine continue to complete their daily symptom screening in CoVerified.
Students will be asked to quarantine in accordance with CDC guidance. Students who live in singles or have an individual bedroom in a suite are typically quarantined on campus. While in quarantine, students can neither have visitors nor leave their room except:
- To use the bathroom in the suite or residence hall. Students should also clean the areas they used in the bathroom and then return to their room promptly.
- To pick up grab-and-go meals at the dining hall (and then immediately return to their room).
- To participate in the Colby testing program.
- For outdoor exercise activities as described by the Maine CDC, “such as swimming or hiking, provided that [quarantined students] abide by physical distancing guidelines and avoid contact with other people.” Students cannot exercise with others and while outdoors, cannot enter any buildings, including the Athletics and Recreation Center. They must return to their room immediately following the completion of exercise activities.
- In case of an emergency.
Any time a quarantined student leaves the room for permitted actions, they must wear a face covering, routinely wash their hands, and practice social distancing. Failure to comply with any of these rules is a violation of Colby policy.
Access to General Support
Students will have access to support while in quarantine. The COVID-19 Response Team can provide assistance with facilitating communications with faculty or administrative staff, personal needs, and deliveries of materials needed for academic work, as well as to answer general questions about the quarantine process. To reach them, email email@example.com. Medical/health questions should be directed to the Health Services at firstname.lastname@example.org or 207- 859-4460.
Health Testing and Screening will work with quarantined students to provide COVID-19 testing. A member of the COVID testing team will directly coordinate testing times with quarantined students. Any questions regarding testing should be directed to email@example.com.
Access to Meals
As noted above, quarantined students are allowed to leave their room to collect food from the dining hall. There will be grab-and-go options available to take back to a student’s room. Students will also receive a Google form directly from Dining Services that they can fill out if they would prefer to have meals delivered to their quarantine location.
Access to Academic Needs
For assistance acquiring textbooks or technology, please contact the COVID-19 Response Team (firstname.lastname@example.org) to arrange for a delivery or service. In regard to courses, students are asked to reach out to their professors to coordinate any additional academic support.
Academic deliveries are made once every afternoon on weekdays. Students should plan ahead and communicate their needs in advance to ensure they receive their materials in a timely manner.
Release from Quarantine
Students are expected to be released seven days from their exposure date so long as they continue to test negative and remain asymptomatic. In anticipation of their release, students should get tested at the earliest possible quarantine testing window. If a student receives a negative PCR test result from their day 6 test and a negative antigen test result on day 7 of their quarantine, a member of the COVID-19 Response Team will be in touch with them shortly thereafter. Students must wait to hear from the COVID-19 Response Team before they are released.
Colby and its healthcare providers strongly recommend that students remain in quarantine in the Colby-designated space and that students not leave the off-campus location to complete quarantine with family or others. If a student chooses to leave, they assume the risks of that decision, including the risk to family or others, who may be exposed to COVID-19 and the severe adverse health impacts that can result from the infection. Colby may need to notify the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention if a student leaves before a quarantine period is complete. Questions about the importance of quarantining in place should be directed to Health Services at email@example.com or 207-859-4460.
