Colby’s 714-acre campus helps define the school’s atmosphere by offering extraordinary natural and man-made facilities for students and groups. The Colby experience is characterized by intellectual challenge, a strong sense of community, a friendly campus atmosphere, global reach, and efforts to embrace diversity.
Students are offered a wealth of opportunities outside the classroom to complement their academic experience. The Colby 360 program establishes a setting for student life designed to achieve five specific learning outcomes:
1) development of life skills 2) appreciation of and engagement with diversity and human difference, 3) understanding democracy and civic responsibility, 4) promoting wellness and healthy lifestyle choices, and 5) leadership education for the 21st century.
Programs that define and advance the Colby residential experience include:
• Faculty/staff residents: Eight faculty and/or staff families live in residence halls. • Faculty/staff associates: Numerous faculty/staff members affiliate with a residence hall and participate in the life of the students. • Take a Professor to Lunch: Students invite professors to dining halls for informal interaction, and the Office of Campus Life pays for the professor’s meal. • Off-campus engagement: Through the Goldfarb Center for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement, the Colby Volunteer Center, Colby Cares About Kids, civic-engagement learning in courses, and other programs, students are engaged in the world beyond campus. • Mixed class-year halls: With class years integrated (there are no first-year dorms), students are more quickly acclimated and better immersed in the life of the College. • Planned hall activities: More than 600 social, cultural, intellectual, recreational, and public service activities are planned in the residence halls each year, fostering bonds among hall mates. • Events and activities: Each year academic departments, administrative offices, student government, and myriad student groups sponsor a rich variety of cultural, intellectual, and arts events.
Student organizations have been formed to satisfy almost every interest imaginable. The College sponsors lectures, films, arts presentations, and performances each week, and there are endless recreational possibilities afforded by the Maine mountains, lakes, and coast.
Students may choose to become involved in intercollegiate varsity and club teams or intramural sports; Outing Club; instrumental or choral groups; dramatic productions; Student Government Association, Student Programming Board, or College committees; student publications or the College radio station; and service, religious, or ethnic organizations.
